This is the question over at Jamie Ridler Studio on this Wishcasting Wednesday.
How appropriate that this came up today. I was cleaning up today and came across a pamphlet for art school.
And there was a preview workshop next week. And so I looked it up on the internet and spoke to my partner about it. He said he would support whatever I wanted to do. And then gave voice to my fears that Artists don’t generally make a living from their art. And that is one of my fears.
I went to uni to get my law degree and a BA in history and one of the justifications for getting a student loan was that I would be earning enough afterwards to cover it. Fears, fears, fears.
And then when I went to put the time and place in my diary and for that day I see I had put in “Research art opportunities in New Zealand”. Talk about signs. But still the fears exist. This is so different to anything I have done, and a part of me wonders if I am suffering an early midlife crisis. Or if I am good enough. Or. Or. Or…..so many wonderings.
But today on this Wishcasting Wednesday this is the dream that I wish to explore.

Wow, Natasha. Poignant, because I’ve been wrestling with similar feelings, although I’m in a slightly different place than you. I hope you find a way to make a living at what you love.
For the record, I know it’s possible, because I know of artists who do make a living from their art, and it’s not because they’re lucky; it’s because they’ve discovered what works for them.
As Natasha herself wishes, so I wish with her also.

Great dream Natasha (I’m on the same track, just a slightly different place from you). You can make a very good living as an artist. My work sells well and easily, I just need to make the jump to producing/selling more originals and prints.
As Natasha wishes for herself, so I wish for her as well.
I’ve worked for 20 plus years in areas that didn’t really serve me and I was not happy. I go laid off a few months ago and this is my time to find something that I feel passionate about. I know it’s been said before but….if you do something you love, the money will follow. As you wish for yourself today, I wish for you too.
As Natasha wishes, so I wish for her also.
Go for it!
~as Natasha wishes to explore her world without fears holding her back s o I wish for her too…may you walk freely in your path…each step getting you closer to where you wish to be…brightest blessings~
What a great dream, with so many good portents. As Natasha wishes for herself, so I wish for her also.
Fear truly is an insiduous killer–do not allow it to kill your dreams. You can do this. One step at a time…
As you wish for yourself, Natasha, I so wish for you as well. Brightest blessings.
Hi Natasha,
I believe it’s fear itself that keeps artists from making money with their art. If you believe in your artwork, then you will make money from it. I wish for you to follow your heart. We’ve got a world filled with people not following their hearts. Time to reverse the trend!
